Help & Support

Answers to the most common questions about setting up and using Nudge for Sonos.

Most common

No speakers showing up

Make sure your iPhone and Sonos are on the same Wi-Fi network (not a guest network), confirm Nudge has Local Network permission (iPhone Settings → Nudge → Local Network → on), and the correct household is selected. Then tap Rescan Network — on iPhone it’s the refresh icon on the Speakers tab; on Apple Watch it’s the Rescan Network button on the Speakers screen. Still nothing? Restart the app; as a last resort, restart your router and Sonos.

My Apple Watch says “login failed” but the iPhone app works

Your Watch gets its connection from the iPhone app. Open Nudge on your iPhone first, confirm it’s set up and connected, keep the phone nearby on the same network, then reopen the Watch app to re-sync.

My speakers disappeared after a Sonos update

Sonos updates can briefly drop connections. Tap Rescan Network to rediscover your speakers — the refresh icon on the Speakers tab (iPhone) or the Rescan Network button on the Speakers screen (Apple Watch) — and make sure you’re on the same Wi-Fi network. If they’re still missing, restart the app and rescan again.

My iPhone and Watch aren’t syncing

Keep both devices on, unlocked, and in range during sync, and make sure the iPhone app is set up and connected. Reopen both apps; if needed, re-pair from the Watch app.

Getting started & setup

Owners, DJs, and family — who needs a Sonos account?

Only the Sonos system owner signs in with a Sonos account. DJs and family members join by invite — no Sonos account, no sign-in. Everyone uses the same Nudge app.

What do I need?

An Apple Watch (Series 6 or later, watchOS 11+) paired with an iPhone on iOS 17 or later. The iPhone app handles speaker discovery and talks to your Sonos system in the background.

Connecting Nudge to your Sonos

If you own the Sonos system: sign in once with your Sonos account to authorize Nudge. It uses your local Wi-Fi for real-time control and the Sonos Cloud API to sync Favorites and playlists. If your session ever expires, re-authorize from your profile avatar (top right) → Settings → Sonos Cloud → Manage.

If you’re a DJ or family member: you don’t need a Sonos account. Accept your invite and you’re in — no sign-in required.

Choosing the right household / I see the wrong speakers

If you have more than one Sonos household, switch between them from the Account sheet — tap your avatar, then pick the right household. Seeing unexpected speakers usually means the wrong household is selected.

Installing the Apple Watch app + complication

Install Nudge on your Watch from the iPhone’s Watch app, then add the Nudge complication by long-pressing your watch face → Edit → choose a complication slot.

DJ Access

What is DJ Access?

DJ Access lets you hand friends and family control of your Sonos — playing music, adjusting volume, and browsing your library — without sharing your Sonos account or password. You stay the owner and can revoke access anytime, from anywhere, even when you’re away from home.

How do I invite someone as a DJ?

Tap your profile avatar (top right) → Account → your household (marked Owner) → Invite DJ. Confirm with Face ID — this protects your Sonos credentials — then enter your name so your guest knows who invited them (optional, and remembered for next time). Nudge shows a QR code with a five-minute timer; have your guest scan it, or tap Send via Messages. If it expires, tap Generate New Invite. Your guest doesn’t need a Sonos account.

What can a DJ do — and not do?

DJs can control playback and volume, browse your library, and group speakers — search, play, pause, skip, queue tracks, and adjust volume. DJs cannot change your system settings, sign in or access your Sonos account, or invite other DJs.

How do I remove or revoke a DJ?

Tap your profile avatar → Account → your household → Manage DJs. You’ll see everyone with access, each marked Active. Swipe left on a DJ and tap Revoke — access ends immediately, with no password changes needed.

Managing multiple DJs

You can invite more than one DJ; each appears in your DJ list with when they were invited. If you own more than one Sonos household, each household keeps its own DJ list — manage them separately from the Account screen. Inviting and revoking work from anywhere, even when you’re not home.

Being a DJ

I’ve been invited as a DJ — how do I join?

Scan the QR code your host shows you, or open the link they send via Messages. If you don’t have Nudge yet, you’ll be taken to the App Store to download it; if you already have it, it opens straight to your invitation. Tap Continue, review what you can do, then Accept Invite — you’re connected. Open Nudge to start playing.

What do I need to be a DJ?

Just an iPhone on iOS 17 or later with the Nudge app — that’s the minimum. An Apple Watch (Series 6 or later, watchOS 11+) is supported too for wrist control, but it isn’t required. You don’t need a Sonos account or the owner’s password; your invitation gives you music control. Invitations expire after about five minutes, so scan promptly or ask your host for a fresh one.

What can I do as a DJ?

From Nudge on your iPhone (or Apple Watch) you can play any music, control volume, search the library, and group speakers. You can’t change the system’s setup or access the owner’s account settings, and the owner can revoke your access at any time.

Does being a DJ cost anything?

No — being an invited DJ is completely free. There’s nothing to buy and no subscription; just download Nudge, accept your invitation, and start playing. Only the system owner needs a paid Nudge plan.

My DJ access stopped working

If you can no longer control the music, the owner may have revoked your access, or your invite expired before you accepted it. Ask the owner to send you a new invitation.

Connection & network

Wi-Fi requirements

Your iPhone and Sonos must be on the same network. Mesh systems and split 2.4/5 GHz bands are fine as long as they’re one network — but guest networks often block device-to-device traffic and will stop discovery.

Local Network permission (iPhone)

iOS requires Local Network access to find your speakers. Enable it under Settings → Nudge → Local Network.

I have both S1 and S2 speakers — can I use both?

Yes. Nudge supports both S1- and S2-compatible speakers. If you run them as separate households, select the one you want to control.

VPN, guest network, or firewall issues

A VPN on your iPhone, AP isolation, or a strict firewall can block speaker discovery. Turn off VPN or allow local network traffic, and connect to your main (not guest) network.

Music & playback

Finding your Favorites and library

Use voice or text search to find any song across your Sonos Favorites and your music library in one search.

Some of my own music isn’t showing in search

Index your library first: profile avatar (top right) → Settings → Music Library → Tap to index. Once indexed, your personal tracks appear in search alongside your Sonos Favorites.

Favorites or playlists not syncing

Pull to refresh or Rescan Network. Favorites and playlists come from the Sonos system’s account, so if they still look stale, the system owner may need to re-authorize: profile avatar (top right) → Settings → Sonos Cloud → Manage.

A speaker isn’t responding or feels laggy

Usually a brief network hiccup. Refresh and check your Wi-Fi signal near the speaker — playback control routes locally for speed, so a strong network keeps it instant.

Grouping rooms

Group or ungroup rooms to play in sync; changes show up in both Nudge and the Sonos app.

Account & privacy

Can I share Nudge with my family?

Yes. Nudge supports Apple Family Sharing, so one plan covers your whole family group.

Is my listening data private?

Yes. Nudge is local-first — your music, listening habits, and speaker names never leave your home, and are never sold or shared. We use standard, anonymized analytics only to measure aggregate usage and diagnose crashes, never tied to your music or Sonos account. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.
